The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a
Tornado Watch for portions of

Central and eastern North Carolina
extreme southeast Virginia
coastal waters

Effective this Friday morning from 320 am until 1000 am EST.

Tornadoes... hail to 1 inch in diameter... thunderstorm wind gusts
to 70 mph... and dangerous lightning are possible in these areas.

The Tornado Watch area is along and 105 statute miles east and
west of a line from 70 miles northeast of Elizabeth City North
Carolina to 30 miles east southeast of Fayetteville North
Carolina.

Remember... a Tornado Watch means conditions are favorable for
tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area.
Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening
weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible
warnings.

Discussion... thunderstorms/supercells developing upstream across nrn
SC expected to move/develop newd into parts of NC during the next
few hours... where ample shear will be present for sustained
activity. Other supercells may evolve from confluence/low level
warm advection band over extreme ern NC. Deep shear should
continue to increase across region this morning as 80+ kt mid level
speed Max continues newd from the srn Appalachians. Strongest
activity should be confined to region along quasistationary front
from S cntrl NC newd into se VA.

Aviation... tornadoes and a few severe thunderstorms with hail
surface and aloft to 1 inch. Extreme turbulence and surface wind
gusts to 60 knots. A few cumulonimbi with maximum tops to 450.

I am just north of the watch area; so far this morning we have had a little thunder with some brief moderate showers. Southwest of me though are some potent thunderstorms across northern NC into extreme SE VA. These thunderstorms are moving into an area of vertical shear..or winds turning with height..making supercells and a few tornadoes possible. I wouldnt be too surprised to see additional watches issued later this morning for the Delmarva and the remainder of SE VA.

Man I'm from Se VA (Hampton) and still have my parents/nephew and childhood friends there. Hope the wx doesn't get crazy out there.

I grew up in Hampton...graduated from Bethel High School class of 1979. I currently live in Newport News.

Just one warning (Severe Thunderstorm) in neighboring Franklin County to my east between 6 and 6:30 am and that was all...fortunately to my knowledge!
