Very rare a Tornado hits NYC area.

I live in the northern suburbs of NYC and we seem to get severe storms but never are any Tornadic. Is it because it is too hilly around here and by the time the severe storms get here they weaken? Can nyone shed some light on this?

It may have more to do with your proximity to the cool Atlantic. I remember experiencing the same thing while living in New England. You don't have to live right on the coast to get that stabilizing effect.

In addition to isobar's post which is pretty much right on the money (Great post, isobar). Also, NYC has that urban heat island effect as well, in which latent heat released (stored) has a tendency to disrupt the circulation of such events.

Then why wouldn't they get waterspouts? Does the water have to be alot warmer...say 70+ degrees for that to happen?
