FORT WORTH, Texas - When warning sirens howl throughout the city at 1 p.m. today, relax.

It's only a test.

The 90-second warning will test the performance of 132 new sirens before the city signs off with contractor SafetyCom Inc., said Juan Ortiz, emergency management coordinator for Fort Worth and Tarrant County.

The new warning system, expected to have a total price tag of about $2.8 million, began going up in early 2002. The new sirens have already been through extensive testing and have been sounded along with the city's old siren system during weather emergencies, Ortiz said.

Now that all the sirens are installed, however, city officials want to ensure that no technical problems have surfaced.

Wow 132 sirens, and a hefty price tag too. I am in Branch County, Michigan. We have testing of our sirens the first Saturday of every month.
