Parts of North Texas awoke to a picture postcard sceen of snow cover trees, rooftops, and lawns early Easter Morning. Parts of Denton, Parker, Tarrant, and Johnson Counties saw rain change over to snow with large flakes coming down at a pretty good clip, enough so that Crowly and Burleson TX received 1 to 2 inches of snow before it changed back over to a steady rain. How did this all happen?

With High preasure to the west and strong low preasure to the east very cold air was pulled down on the back side of the departing low which deepened enough that the rain change to snow even with temps avg in the upper 30's at the surface, the area of warm air wasn't thick enough for the snow to change back to rain before hitting the ground so it begain to stick.

The falling snow lasted for about 30 min befors changing back to rain and just as quickly as the snow fell it was gone again and soon was washed away. I never would have thought I would see snow on Easter morning but this is Texas and when it come's to the weather anything can happen.

A COLD-CORE UPPER LOW TRACKED THROUGH NORTH CENTRAL TEXAS EARLY THIS
MORNING. ENHANCED LIFT NEAR THE CENTER RESULTED IN TREMENDOUS
COOLING OF AN ALREADY COLD COLUMN. THE COOLING WAS SUFFICIENT ENOUGH
TO ALLOW SNOW TO REACH THE GROUND IN FORT WORTH...AND AREAS TO THE
IMMEDIATE SOUTH AND WEST...DESPITE SURFACE TEMPERATURES ABOVE
FREEZING.

THE BULK OF THE SNOW FELL IN A SWATH FROM PARKER COUNTY...TO JOHNSON
COUNTY...INCLUDING SOUTH FORT WORTH. AS MUCH AS 2 INCHES OF SNOW
COVERED THE GROUND IN PARTS OF PARKER COUNTY. THE SNOW WAS HEAVY
ENOUGH IN ALVARADO (JOHNSON COUNTY) TO MAKE THE ROADS SLUSHY.

THERE WAS NO SNOW OBSERVED AT DFW AIRPORT TODAY. IN THE OFFICIAL
CLIMATE RECORD FOR DALLAS/FORT WORTH (SEE LOCATIONS BELOW)...NO SNOW
HAS EVER BEEN RECORDED ON EASTER.

ALTHOUGH SNOW IS RARE IN LATE MARCH...THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL
EVENTS IN NORTH TEXAS. THE HEAVIEST SNOWFALL IN LATE MARCH AT THE
OFFICIAL CLIMATE SITE WAS ON MARCH 29, 1937...WHEN 2.0 INCHES OF
SNOW FELL IN DOWNTOWN FORT WORTH.

RECENT LATE MARCH SNOW EVENTS INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING...
MARCH 29, 1987 0.5 INCHES
BEFORE DAWN THROUGH LATE MORNING
MORNING LOW = 29F

NEARLY AN HOUR OF VERY LIGHT RAIN/SNOW MIX AROUND MIDNIGHT
TEMPERATURE AT TIME = 40-41F

It was a wild weekend of weather here in the Lone Star State between the severe storms Friday night and the Easter snow event.

Hey Captain Crunch... nice pictures.

My daughter had snow for one of early first Easter mornings and of course she had been told about the Easter Bunny, hunting easter eggs in the grass, etc. and then we had a big snowstorm!

So we sang Christmas Carols that Easter... And the next Christmas we had a few presents from "The Easter Bunny" in commemoration of screwy weather.

The tradition continues! Her kids also had snow on the ground for Easter this year... so out came some Christmas stuff... And I noticed that her kids get a little present from "The Easter Bunny" each year...

Perhaps the little girl in the photo will also remember "Snow for Easter" in later years...
