Susan Strom
Lightning Photojournalist
Fountain Hills, Arizona (this is northeast of Phoenix)
She is known as Arizona's Lightning Lady. Susan Strom became fascinated with
Arizona's desert lightning after a particularly severe weather event in
Scottsdale, Arizona in July of 1994. Shortly thereafter she set out to learn
about the Soutwestern Monsoon of the United States specifically to
photograph lightning and electical storms using traditional still
photography. Stormchasing has taken her to 11 states. "Tornado Alley is a
day's drive away, and I can chase there as well before Monsoon comes to the
deserts." However, Strom's favorite chase territory is the Arizona desert,
close to her heart. An avid hiker, Strom holds lightning photography shows
in support of desert wildlife parks. She works at a graphics and media arts
college, having a background in magazine and a BA in graphic design from CSU
Sacramento. Strom's mission is lightning photojournalism, the photograph
must be real. "My desire is to present the storm unchanged. I want viewers
of the work to be able to see and enjoy the image of the storm exactly as it
happened. Lightning only grants us a split second to view it. I specifically
enjoy extending the time we can see it through photography." Tune in at 10:30 EDT At
