Dear David:
Your access to AccuWeather.com services may be threatened by government action!
AccuWeather and other commercial weather providers have been able to offer you highly accurate, localized and up-to-date weather information on the Internet by applying the latest science and technology to weather information collected by the National Weather Service and shared with the public.
Unfortunately, the National Weather Service can, and increasingly does, delay and withhold information from the public, including the Commercial Weather Industry and the media. Among the information sometimes withheld are cooperative observer real-time snowfall reports, hurricane reconnaissance reports, and other critical information. Withholding such information endangers lives and property and diminishes the value of the weather communications infrastructure of the nation, including this and other similar web sites.
Senate Bill 786, "The National Weather Services Duties Act of 2005," was recently introduced into Congress to require the National Weather Service (NWS) to distribute government-generated weather information "in real-time, and without delay . . . in a manner that ensures that all members of the public have the opportunity for simultaneous and equal access." No such requirement currently exists in federal law.
When passed, this bill will mandate that the public, including users like pilots, boaters and farmers, weather enthusiast and professionals alike, will all have unrestricted real-time access to government weather information that is being collected by our tax dollars.
We urge with you to join with us in supporting Senate Bill 786, "The National Weather Services Duties Act of 2005."
