When I heard some thunder, I thought "oh kewl, maybe I'll get a little rain."
No watches or warnings, then BOOM!! The thunder got louder and louder and the wind started whipping, and then it started POURING. And I mean, POURING. Reminded me of Allison type rains. Branches were falling, leaves and debris flying everywhere and the rain was sideways. Idiot here went on the porch but ran back inside when it started hailing! Somewhere in here the electricity went off, but not for long. Then, as the hail stopped and the wind let up a little, the weather alert went off. A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued.... "No sheet Sherlock!" lol
j/k - it could have developed right over me for all I know. Anyway, I called NWS in Lake Charles and gave my report like the warning asked. hehe

My yard is a lake now, and that's a good thing!!

Similar situation happened to me several years ago. A supercell formed right on top of me..complete with winds estimated by me to be 70mph and some hail and torrential rain. It was an "air mass" type thunderstorm, but I live near the water and sometimes the sea breezes combined with the prevailing winds can create enough shear and lift to cause isolated supercells and an occasional tornado.

I got a nice little shock after making the post above. I went outside to leave and found a tree snapped in two, and the top half landed INCHES from my car! I almost had a heart attack but was thanking God it didn't land on my car!! It wasn't a huge tree and wouldn't have crushed it but it would have dented it badly and busted glass. I'm guessing lightning struck it because it was snapped and the tree was nice and green, not a dead tree. When I left, everything near my house was littered with debris, mostly small branches and stuff like that.

The storm you're talking about must be the one that caused power plants to shut down and led to 7 counties north of Houston to have a blackout that lasted for hours. You're lucky about your car, someone in my block recently had a limb snap during high winds and all the things you mentioned happened to their car.
