urgent - immediate broadcast requested Severe Thunderstorm Watch number 501 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 1010 PM CDT Mon Jun 9 2003

The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for portions of

North central and northeast Kansas southeast Nebraska

Effective this Monday night and Tuesday morning from 1010 PM until 400 am CDT.

Hail to 2 inches in diameter... thunderstorm wind gusts to 70 mph... and dangerous lightning are possible in these areas.

The Severe Thunderstorm Watch area is along and 90 statute miles east and west of a line from 25 miles west northwest of Omaha Nebraska to 55 miles east southeast of Hill City Kansas.

Remember... a Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible warnings. Severe thunderstorms can and occasionally do produce tornadoes.

Other watch information... this Severe Thunderstorm Watch replaces Tornado Watch number 493. Watch number 493 will not be in effect after 1010 PM CDT. Continue... ww 496... ww 497... ww 498... ww 499... ww 500...

Discussion... earlier supercells in central neb are merging into a larger storm cluster... while additional convection is developing ewd into N central KS. Though deep layer shear and instability are still sufficient for supercells... the storm mergers suggest that the main severe threats will transition to damaging winds and large hail through the early morning hours as storms move E/sewd.

Aviation... a few severe thunderstorms with hail surface and aloft to 2 inches. Extreme turbulence and surface wind gusts to 60 knots. A few cumulonimbi with maximum tops to 500. Mean storm motion vector 28025.
