Storm Damage Leaves Families Without A Home

POSTED: 11:32 p.m. EDT June 12, 2003

OAKLAND, Fla. --
Several families in Oakland, just on the other side of Winter Garden are just thankful to be alive after strong storms ripped through their homes.

Whatever it was that roared down highway 50 and Tubbs street was enough to tear off a roof and nearly suck one woman out of her window.

Barb Stewart says just after work she heard the freight train sounds. She latched onto some furniture. Just in time, her boyfriend grabbed her hand to keep her from being picked up and thrown outside. The roof came off, ceiling crashed in, and the couple was trapped inside. Fortunately, Lieutenant Barry Kelly got them out in time.
The Red Cross helped seven people find a place to stay, but the storm victims will eventually need another place to live. Crews are fixing power lines. The building inspector had to place signs on 4 units, condemning them.

The National Weather Service is still waiting to determine if it was a tornado that hit the area.
