November Tornado Spike

Although I am at work at the moment, I thought it would be interesting to see what statistics others might uncover about the spike in early November tornado activity that has occurred over the decades.

The Newburgh/Evansville tornado of recent days reminded me of that reality.

Anyone have any more information they can find on this interesting "spike" in tornado activity that occurs periodically in early November in some years?

I don't really know but I do recall that here in Springfield Mo in about 1990 or 91 we had the Thanksgiving tornado where an F3 went tearing through during a cold front after a hot spell. Weird thing was it immediately started snowing right after the storm! It was strange because nothing looks as bad as it is covered in snow. It was horrible for the people without power or who lost their roof or their whole house.

It does seem like we have had more mild winters recently here ( not like when I was a kid  ) and while this year has been very calm for us tornado wise it wouldn't surprise me if we didn't get some outbreaks late. It has been plenty hot enough.

It's true about this mini spike in November, although I'm having trouble finding specific stats.

Two notable outbreaks:

Nov 9-11, 2002. There were 76 tornadoes and 36 deaths in 17 states. The Van Wert, OH tornado was an F4.

Nov 21-23, 1992. 94 tornadoes and 26 deaths in 13 states.

Here's a graphic from The Tornado Project, but I know I've seen a more recent one somewhere with a larger spike. Can't find it right now though.

We had a tornado here just before Thanksgiving last year. Also, an F4 tornado struck Rankin County Miss in Nov 92 killing 10. It missed my house by a mile or so.....MGC
