RECORD EVENT REPORT

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NORMAN OK

102 PM CST WED MAR 01 2006

 

...NEW RECORD MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE SET AT WICHITA FALLS...

 

THE HIGH TEMPERATURE SO FAR TODAY AT SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE IN

WICHITA FALLS HAS BEEN 98 DEGREES.  THIS BREAKS A 30 YEAR RECORD FOR

THE WARMEST HIGH TEMPERATURE FOR MARCH 1.  THE PREVIOUS RECORD WAS

92 DEGREES... WHICH HAD OCCURRED BACK IN 1976.

 

THIS IS THE EARLIEST IN THE YEAR THAT WICHITA FALLS HAS BEEN THIS

WARM SINCE RECORDS BEGAN (IN 1897). THE NEXT WARMEST DATE WAS 100

DEGREES ON MARCH 27, 1971.

Wow, thats impressive. Must be quite a shocker for them since they've been used to 60's and 70's.

It is really warm here in Norman today...and by warm I mean HOT AS HELL (as far as this Connecticutter is concerned). It's currently 91 here on campus at the Univ of Oklahoma (~20 miles S of OKC) with an RH of only 14%. Needless to say there are several large wildfires breaking out across the state.

Wow, this reminds me a lot of Feb. 1996 a lot - it hit 95* at DFW. Then in 1996, take a look at these records set at DFW in July 1996:

7/4 105 / 1996
7/5 103 / 1996
7/6 105 / 1996
7/7 106 / 1996

Wonder if 2006 will turn out to be as hot.
