Rant time! :x :x

Now that Arizona got it's precip and broke their cycle without precip, can we now get some meaningful rainfall in Texas? Since Nov 1 I've had only .10 of inch of rain at my house on the norhtwest side of Corpus. So we are now over 100 days without anything worth shooting coming from the clouds. Fires are breaking out everywhere in the state and it was reported that in West Texas that 7 people lost their lives yeasterday. Our farmers can't even plant their cotton and grain because their is zero moisture in the ground! And the long term forecasts show no relief worth a hoot in sight.

This drought could be a big time record breaker if the summer turns out to be a hot and dry one. Any of you pro mets out there see anything promissing?

AZ got precip but it's probably not enough to make any difference-especially down in my corner where rainfall was minimal and the drought the worst.

Yeah, it's really bad in a lot of the state, and Oklahoma too. We're in better shape over here, but we could use some rain as well. But it's nothing like it is where you are and others in the state. I pray some relief comes soon. I heard about the deaths. :(

According to this Morning's DFW Climatic Summary, we manage to squeeze in 0.15 inches. (Thrilling)

The NWS said that we're gonna have a greater chance of Thunderstorms over the weekend. Not expecting anything severe at the moment, but we should get some much needed rain out of this.

Well, apparently we're in worse shape down here than I realized. With dry and windy conditions lately, there were several wildfires that started today (Tues.) in the area, and one of them, a debris fire that got out of control, was about 10 miles from my house! It burned more than 200 acres.

I found this map from NOAA which shows Southeast Texas in a severe drought. I know there are drier areas in Texas though. Hopefully we'll all get some rain soon!

I dunno...it's only part of Hawaii and it only shows it as abnormally dry. I guess that could just mean not as much rain as usual and they could use a little. I know there's been some flooding there though.

In the 1st one, it shows my area under a moderate drought and the 2nd one, it shows my area under a severe drought. I guess that would explain the fires around here.
I wonder why the difference though...they both have NOAA on them. :?:

Oh well, I guess it doesn't matter. As long as we get some rain and no more wildfires. That big one 10 miles away was a little too close for comfort. There was another wildfire that was even closer, but it wasn't as big as that one. We "usually" have enough rain and don't have to worry about fires like folks further west.

Looks like a possible dust bowl developing??? News story posted March 16th

Southern Plains weather may point to return of Dust Bowl´ drought

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- AccuWeather.com meteorologists, whom recently warned that the U.S. appears to be entering another “Dust Bowl” drought, point to recent severe weather events as additional evidence this may be occurring.

“It´s amazing how dry the Southern Plains are,” said Ken Reeves, AccuWeather.com director of forecast operations. “The recent breakout of lethal wildfires, which killed more people than the tornadoes that were striking at the same time in the Midwest, are just one indication.

“We´re seeing readings of one percent humidity in some areas, which is extreme. Blowing clouds of dust are reducing visibility in places such as Lubbock and Amarillo, Texas, to about a mile or so.

From Staff Reports

The good news: The weekend rains will help fight the drought in North Texas, said Dan Dixon, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Fort Worth.

The bad news: So much rain fell so quickly that a large amount of it ran off.

"Initially, when we were having the lighter rain, that's very good for the drought, because it falls so gently it'll soak into the ground," Mr. Dixon said.

As for Sunday's rain, "This certainly does help the drought situation, but it's not going to alleviate it completely."
