Derecho Possible Across Portions of S CENTRAL and SE TX
Could be a very interesting and intense night across Texas. Flying out to Mobile, ALA to the Glomar Explorer drilling ship for a software upgrade so I expect a delay at this point.
Excerpt from latest MCD discussion:

The word "derecho" is of Spanish origin, and means straight ahead.
In normal terms its a fast moving line of thunderstorms which produce high velocity straight line winds...........70-100MPH for hundreds of miles.

Yeah, it's bearing down on us the moment. I expect things to get active here in Austin by 10 or 10:30. If it's anything REAL interesting, I'll post.

As best as I understand it, the current action is being driven by a strong shortwave and the main trough is still out west near the Four Corners region. So ... another shot at storms after this.
Yeah, I see that cell cheezy ... it's also 55k high ... yikes!

My flight out of IAH at 7:40AM will be in question. A nasty night and early morning hours ahead.

The MCS consolidating east of San Antonio and Austin may be the derecho that is forming... isolated tornadoes aren't out of the possibility either due to the rich Gulf airmass in place as well as its position relative to the warm front. It will also need to be watched how this MCS will impact tomorrow, if it dies out quickly the warm front shoots northward and svr potential/sups and tornadoes skyrockets tomorrow.

While there was a radar-indicated tornado just southwest of Austin last night, we never had a confirmed touchdown.
However, we did get more than 2 inches of rain and a lot of lightning and thunder and small hail. Overall, it was nice to get the rain. Nothing too severe weatherwise made it all worthwhile. Hope the same can be said for y'all in SE Texas this morn.

Not that it really matters, but . . .
No, they are not the same. A direction has no masculinity or femininity. To the right is a la derecha, straight is derecho, and to the left is a la izquierda. If you think they are the same, be prepared to get lost next time you visit a Spanish-speaking area.
