Different colored lightning

I was driving home tonight in some of the worst storms I have seen in recent years. The lightning was constant, almost every other second or so. I was seeing white and pinkish colors with the lightning. What do the different colors mean?

I heard a long time ago that pinkish/orangish lightning is indicative of a positive charge bolt, as opposed to the far more common negative strike, which bears a white/blue-white color.
Keep in mind that this is only something I heard, and shouldn't be taken as the gospel truth.

I have a book that says. White lightning indicates low humidity, flash of red lightning means rain and blue if there is hail. So I'm guessing pink means rain plus maybe some dust in the air maybe.
