Heat advisories of some sort currently cover 27 states. Is there no break from the heat?

It means that the heat is extreme enough to significantly affect the health of anybody who stays out in the heat for too long.

Well here it depends on where you live. The Southwest Deserts, for example, won't get heat advisories until about 110 or even 115 degrees Fahrenheit, but the Mid-Atlantic, New England, and the Great Lakes area will give heat advisories when the heat reaches 100. The actual temperatures in those areas rarely reach 100; usually its the heat with the humidity that push it that high.

Exactly! The Plains and the Southwest are usually known for the 100 degree heat. On the other hand, the Gulf and East Coast is know for the 90's - though up in the New England area it's more the 80's, but it's the humidity and dew points that kill us.

We're looking at 100 degree weather with high humidity and dewpoints here for the next few days.

Ack! I was just outside and my steering wheel burnt my hands! Heck with it, I'm leaving the windows down, the van feels like an oven too! (no shade to park under here either)

The hubby just emailed me and told me he took Digger in from the deck, it's too hot for him :D

Criteria for heat advisories and excessive heat warnings differ slightly from state to state, but as a general rule ...

heat advisories are issued when the heat index is expected to be between 105-110 for a period of 3 hours or longer in a day.

Excessive heat warnings are when temperatures combined with humidity are expected to exceed 110º-115º for a prolonged period during the day.
