Well... drought conditions have worsened to record proportions across central and north Alabama and it appears no relief is in sight without a tropical system.

Birmingham is right at 16 inches BELOW normal and just entered a Stage 3 drought plan which includes bans on automatic sprinkler systems, car-washes, etc. Gadsden (just east and north of Birmingham) has a deficit right at around 19 inches BELOW normal.

Amazingly, since January 2005, the average rainfall for Alabama is about 47 inches BELOW normal.

Take all the rain you want. We have too much rain in Texas.

Wow, if we were 16 inches below normal in a year, our rainfall would be negative. Luckily there is a river running through the towns up here.

Anyway, here's wishing you some rain.

We are in drought conditions too and last night's snowstorm isn't going to help much. Lots of people are worried about fire season.

Yeah, the drought here is bad. Per the NWS Mobile statement on June 1st, Mobile's down over 14 inches since Jan. of this year and almost 32 inches since Jan. 06! As I type this, it's raining outside-- which is great but it won't make a dent. They say we're in a moderate drought but fortunately there's no rationing here, yet. I went to a teacher workshop on conservation education this week and we were discussing the drought. We decided the only thing that would pull us out of this is a tropical storm. Though we agreed that we did NOT need another Hurricane Danny-- 3 days+ of rain, rain, rain that gave us 52 inches on Dauphin Island and 30 or so around Mobile!

The lone "Exceptional Drought" spot in the whole US is centered over us in North-Central Alabama... hope things improve soon... it's getting pretty bad.

Global warming could be causing the weird rainy pattern in Texas and the dry pattern in Alabama. Wouldn't it be weird if North Texas becomes a rain forest because of global warming and Alabama becomes an uninhabitable desert nightmare where no humans can live with monster AC bills. A recent study said global warming will create entire new ecosystems on our planet so it is possible.

LOL the planet has been doing that for ages! The deserts use to be jungles.. and the jungles deserts. Our earth is a magnificent ever changing creation! Boy things sure would be boring if they always stayed the same!

Except with global warming it is happening now and it is going to get much worse within our lifetime and our children's lifetime. I'd take boring over the massive famine, devastation and loss of life global warming is going to cause.

Instead of your sentence above what you should really say is our Earth is a magnificent ever changing creation that's being rapidly destroyed by man-made global warming and pollution. Your post makes it sound like global warming is going to be some fun party. Even if we do OK here in the U.S. for a while thanks to air conditioning it isn't going to be fun for those in third world countries that lose loved ones and homes.

This drought would have happened global warming or not because the set-up globally is condusive for it, global warming wouldn't change this side of thing too much, just give higher temps. I was reading back on this forum in the apst and back then it was Texas that wa shaving a pretty severe drought, now its Alabama and probably in a nother 5 years it'll be somewhere else.
Here in the UK we had a pretty decent drought from November 04-November 06 and now we are back in a more rainy pattern again, these thigns just come and go...global warming may well be making them a little worse and is certainly causing temps to rise then but the set-up that is casuing the drought would have occured anyway even if GW wasn't occuring right now.

1. I haven't decided where I stand on global warming... though I see that you have very strong feelings on it (which I can respect).

2. My post was meant to point out that these things have been happening for ages without man made anything having anything to do with it. Maybe mother nature just decided it's time for one place to be dry and and another wet?

Things WILL change count on it... IF it will or not any faster because of "global warming", I am not sure... but that's a debate for another thread.
