...heat advisory in effect from 12 pm to 8 pm edt friday...

the national weather service in mount holly has issued a heat
advisory for urbanized locations in the greater philadelphia
metropolitan area...which is in effect from 12 pm to 8 pm edt
friday.

a hot and humid day is expected tomorrow with high temperatures
mainly in the low to mid 90s. the combination of the heat and
humidity will produce heat indices into the mid and upper 90s.

if you engage in strenuous outdoor activities, try to take it easy
tomorrow. the elderly and very young are also advised to do the
same. as with every change of season, the body needs some time to
acclimate itself to the new environmental conditions.

to ward off the dangers of heat related stress, drink plenty of
liquids, wear loose fitting clothing, and try to remain in a cool
place.

relief will be quick. a cold front is forecast to pass through the
region on friday night. because of this, high temperatures on
saturday will top out in the lower 80s.

I hate the heat.

Why do they put out a Heat Advisory for heat indexes below 100?

Yeah, they don't issue heat advisories here unless heat indexes are well above 100F and overnight lows are at or above 80F.

Possibly because they're not as used to the heat & humidity as we are in the south? Not as many people have a/c? I don't know these to be facts but it's what came to my mind.

Philly is a city of rowhomes and about 60-70% of the people do not have AC and these homes can cook in the summer or when the heat is bad.
I grew up in a rowhome and we didn't have AC, when it got hot we stayed in the basement. There are a lot of elderly here who live in these homes also so one must watch out for them. Our heat wave we had, I think it was 2 years ago, about 100 people died and most of them were elderly in homes like these.

We don't get this kind of heat till maybe July, we're not used to the humidity yet (and it is HUMID & HOT)

It gets hot here. Average July/August temp is about 85-88. Commonly we reach the low 90s and sometimes the mid 90s.

Occasionally we'll push 100 and every once in a while we'll hit 100. We hit 100 5 times last year (that I measured). The highest being 104, 2 shy of our all time record of 106. And when we do hit 100 the heat index is usually near 110, sometimes 115.

Dew points here can be downright unbearable. commonly 70-75 during these heatwaves. Last year we had a day with a dewpoint at 77. That is more associated with Florida and the Gulf Coast then with New Jersey.

Right now it's 96 with a heat index near 99-100. Todays record high is 97 set back in the brutal summer of 1999.

Yeah, heat advisories/heat warnings are issued per criteria established on a countywide or area-wide basis. For metro Philly, it's relatively low. Down in DC, where the rest of the advisories are up, it's similar to other WFOs. I believe the values actually vary depending on the time of year as well, which is why they're being triggered at upper 90s in Philly and low 100s in DC, when the numbers are typically 100/105, respectively.

But don't even say the mid Atlantic isn't used to the humidity . . .
