Middle East flooding/snow/hail fall during winter storm

#1 Postby senorpepr » Fri Nov 26, 2004 2:34 pm

Stormy weather including driving rain, howling winds thunder and hail covered much of Israel on Friday from the north down to the Negev Desert.

The rain caused floods at Yagur, Tzuran in the Sharon region and in Tiberias. There is fear of additional flooding at locations around Israel.

Temperatures are expected to continue to drop.

From Thursday afternoon through Friday morning, 90 millimeters of rain have fallen in the Galilee, 50 millimeters on the Golan Heights, 40 millimeters in the Sharon region and 10 millimeters in Tel Aviv.

According to forecasters, a cold front is expected to move across Israel and more snow is expected to fall on Mount Hermon in northern Israel. Snow was also falling Friday afternoon on other northern mountains higher than 1,000 meters in elevation. Thunderstorms with winds gusting to 100 kilometers per hour were reported in the area.

The rain and wind are expected to weaken on Saturday but flashflood warnings will remain in effect in the Judean and Negev deserts.

The weather is expected to start clearing by Sunday.
JORDAN'S FORECAST FOR TODAY: A cold front from Cyprus will begin to affect the Kingdom today. Therefore, it will be cold with a chance for hail, rain, and snow fall, particularly on the high mountains.

Down in Aqaba, expect partly cloudy to cloudy skies with a chance for scattered showers. Winds southerly to northerly and brisk.
