Looks like we hit a record for the highest recorded temps across all the oceans. Here is the link to the msnbc article. Interesting stuff here.

Correct and the GOM is one of the warmest bodies of water on the planet now if not the warmest!

Funny thing is that the Pacific had a lull before it went into full gear. If conditions were perfect for a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico, we would have a problem on our hands. This heat wave is what made the Gulf so warm.

I have been all over it. The Gulf in a rather large area was 91 to 92 degrees about a week ago. It has actually cooled about two degrees now. But it is still piping hot! 90 degrees is still jet fuel for a tropical system.

Yes, who would guess that? That's an example that SST are not the only factor necessary for tropical cyclogenesis.

Despite the Captain Obvious statement, wxman57's comment is true.

Oh yeah aren't Tropical Cyclones supposed to remove some the heat form the tropics. We need more fish canes. :P

How did we (they) get accurate ocean temperature measurements 100 years ago?

I wouldn't get my news from MSNBC nor believe the comment of the person they interviewed.

How about NOAA? Would you believe them?

NOAA: Warmest Global Ocean Surface Temperatures on Record for July
August 14, 2009

The planet’s ocean surface temperature was the warmest on record for July, breaking the previous high mark established in 1998 according to an analysis by NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C. The combined average global land and ocean surface temperature for July 2009 ranked fifth-warmest since world-wide records began in 1880.

OK. I'll humor you briefly as this isn't suppose to take place in this forum. Really, 100 years? Is that some kind of a trend? The article makes no mention of the colder than normal temps in many regions and a lot of data coming out that stats man made pollutants have little to no affect and that in fact we may actually be entering an Ice age. Of course MSNBC (very vested interest in GW-see General Electric) has not interest in presenting 2 sides of the coin) Get back with me when you have more proof over say about 1,000 or so years. And for the masses, find a more unbiased news source.

I think people who are obviously taking a political position themselves are having trouble with the fact the cooling temperatures they claim for the last year and decade don't compute with record high SST's. In my opinion their attempts to answer this by blaming the source are inadequate (and in my opinion slightly dishonest).

All I can says i where are the record number of Hurricanes, you know the Cat. 6's? Never happened. Good thing the masses aren't falling for the cr@p/hype science (I use that word lightly).

Even in winter we are breaking records all over the world.

Highest Ever Winter Water Temperatures Recorded Off Tasmania
ScienceDaily (Aug. 20, 2009) — Tasmania’s east coast is recording its highest-ever winter water temperatures of more than 13ºC – up to 1.5ºC above normal – due to a strengthening of an ocean current originating north of Australia.Satellites have given oceanographers an insight into a remarkable phenomenon – a significant extension of the Leeuwin Current curling around the southern tip of Tasmania and reaching as far north as St Helens.Remote sensing specialists at CSIRO's Wealth from Oceans Flagship have been observing the current in recent days using satellite data, and ocean measurements made near Maria Island on Tasmania’s east coast.
