Tornado in Hampshire causes chaos

#1 Postby brunota2003 » Wed Nov 04, 2009 5:53 am

Headline on Y! UK's homepage...not sure if it belongs here or in USA Weather (since it is a severe weather event...) so will post it here:

The clean-up's beginning after a tornado swept through Hampshire causing damage to cars and buildings.

Police and emergency services received scores of calls on Tuesday as it moved from Romsey, across to Winchester and then east to the Petersfield and Liss area.

Hampshire police recorded incidents of trees falling on properties, cars and roads. Electricity lines were also affected.

Shop worker Samantha Pritchard from Twyford Post Office in the village saw the tornado go past: "All the leaves were swirling around in circles in the road and it was raining so heavily we could not see."

The tornado was accompanied by strong winds and torrential rain, with several inches falling in minutes in Winchester.

An elderly man who witnessed the freak weather suffered shock, a police spokeswoman said.

In neighbouring West Sussex, a 61-year-old woman suffered a serious leg injury after cladding fell from a block of flats under construction in Crawley.

The unnamed woman was taken to the East Surrey Hospital in Redhill, Surrey.

The Health and Safety Executive is investigating the incident along with Sussex Police, Crawley Borough Council and West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.
