Interesting weather phenomenon. My Aunt in Kentucky took this picture and we were wondering if anyone knows what causes this?

They look like gravity waves.

When was the picture taken; i.e. date and time?

I think you are right! I'd never heard of gravity waves before, but looking at other photos, that's exactly what this looks like. I just e-mailed her back to see what date/time she took these. She uploaded them on September 17th so I think that is the same day she took them.

This website has some really good explanations on these: http://www.weathervortex.com/sky-ribbons.htm

Thanks, GCANE! I learn something new every day around here! :D

My Aunt says, "It was taken September 17, 2011 at around 2:30 pm in Flagg Springs, KY." btw.

Sometimes I see them a few hours ahead of severe weather.

Probably the action of upper air currents. Like the ripples on a seabed.
