**Vostok, Antarctica Daily Obs/The Coldest Place On Earth!**

"Antarctica is the coldest, highest, windiest, driest, and iciest continent on earth"

Coldest: -129° F at Vostok, July 21, 1983 (World low temperature record.)

Highest: Average elevation 8200 feet (2500 meters).

Windiest: Gales reach 200 mph on Commonwealth Bay, George V coast.

Driest: Average precipitation is less than 2 inches per year.

Iciest: The thickest ice found is in Wilkes Land, where it reaches a depth of 15,669 feet (4,776 meters ).

Temperatures on the Polar Plateau range from -115°F to +6°F; the mean temperature is -56°F. Winter wind-chills can plummet to -148°F.



Wind speeds average just 12 mph, a mere summer breeze compared to the 198 mph katabatic winds found on the coast of Antarctica.


Precipitation averages less than 1" annually.


0.03% average humidity combined with the extreme cold make the South Pole region the world's driest desert.


Solar radiation becomes zero as the sun dips below the horizon on March 22 and isn't seen again until September 22.

lol No I cant...which is exactly why I wanted to put up the adverse weather found there. Very interesting though! I'll be keeping a log daily as long as it's ok!

I figured that once a day I'd post some of the worst conditions imaginable and make all of those people down south cringe at these guys' weather they get everyday. Just think...its not even winter down there yet for Antarctica....in a few months you'll see high temps barely above -50 lol! :o

Last year, the lowest reading I saw at Vostok was -110.
The high temperature for the day I believe was a real balmy -97.

Remember this - breathing in air that's -56 or colder can instantly freeze your lungs ... I think I won't be taking any ice fishing vacations there any time soon!
