This is an entirely different picture than the 2018-2017 version. Which begs two questions does a sudden melting of the Arctic Ice Sheet create a significant cooling of lower latitudes as positive feedbacks shut down the Gulf Stream and increase the precipitation potential of the temperate latitudes, and how much does earthquake potential increase from the earth's mantle rebound as the ice disappears.

It is still quite warm in the Arctic this month compared to last year. This year was the 7th largest ice cap melt since 1978.

The Labrador Sea is cooling relative to last month, while the Bering Sea seems to be warming.

The current year over year sea surface change in the Arctic is 6 times the expected temperature change for the next 50 years.

The March year over year sea surface temperature change in the Arctic is about the same as last month. This warming trend seems to be inplace. Last year's cooling trend was temporary.

Long-dormant bacteria and viruses, trapped in ice and permafrost for centuries, are reviving as Earth's climate warms

"Permafrost is a very good preserver of microbes and viruses, because it is cold, there is no oxygen, and it is dark," says evolutionary biologist Jean-Michel Claverie at Aix-Marseille University in France. "Pathogenic viruses that can infect humans or animals might be preserved in old permafrost layers, including some that have caused global epidemics in the past."

It was nearly 65 degrees in Antarctica, which may be the warmest day ever recorded there February 7, 2020. Notice the melt water on the right image.

The warming along the Arctic ice cap continues. The difference between this month and last month is about 10 degrees, but it is still 14 degrees warmer than last year.

Current State of Sea Ice Cover

#29 Postby gigabite » Fri Apr 17, 2020 9:52 pm

This is a collection of informatics posted 4/8/2020 by Goddard Earth Science Laboratories

The sea ice cover is one of the key components of the polar climate system. It has been a focus of attention in recent years, largely because of a strong decrease in the Arctic sea ice cover and modeling results that indicate that global warming could be amplified in the Arctic on account of ice-albedo feedback.

All the sea surface temperatures in the study area are over 3.5 degrees warmer than last year.

Apparent approach of some kind of equilibrium as far as annual sea surface temperature divergence goes in the extreamly warming range. When does the rain forest start blooming?

The right tale of the temperature extreme continues to shorten and there are more areas that show sign of
being cooler than last year relative to last month. The popular phrase to use this month is less bad in spots.

The temperature extremes have shrank. It is still warmer than last year, but not as bad as earlier this year, and there is some cooling in the northern fringes of the study area.

SST GIS CPC evidently website not operating. All the rasters are returning the same data sheet as September 28, 2019.
