A UK white christmas?

#1 Postby Gord_on_snow » Tue Dec 21, 2004 11:48 pm

Seems feasiable.

Wanted to bring this up because i live in Columbus, Ohio nowadays buthave just returned to my home country for christmas...and would you believe it, Columbus is about to get a major winter storm!

So i thought instead of getting down, i'd talk about the chances of a white christmas here.

And they are not bad! The best chance for over 20 years anyhow. Artic air should come down over the UK Friday night and Saturday and it could be quite unstable air with the chance of a trough giving many places in the UK snowfall.

The downside is that models are backing off on winds...light winds mean that snow showers cant make their way inland....and i'm very much inland for xmas day. The other downside is that its a very short cold spell as mild air is quick to come back in for the 26th...but as far as xmas goes, the timing is near perfect. Though i'm not in a favourable positions, quite a few people in the UK are...northern and western areas really, possibly eastern if the wind gets more northerly.

Worth watching and if i see a white xmas in the UK, it wiill be worth missing that Ohio valley storm for as i've always wanted to see a UK white xmas.

Have a great holiday and I look forward to returning to Ohio on Jan 5th when hopefully you US people will show me how snow should be done!

Well Gord you missed the big pre-xmas snowstorm. But we'll probably, or I should say, you'll probably get your fair share of snowstorms still. It's very rare when a major snowstorm hits Cincinnati before early January. We've had minor bursts, flurries to a few inches before and after xmas. But winter doesn't really get going here until early January and especially by mid-January.

So you'll see snow in Ohio. And when you do get back, look for those huge piles of snow in parking lots possibly still melting - they're everywhere down here in Cincinnati.

Mary

PS - when you get back to the US and if you care to, search back for topics about this snowstorm - we had numerous, several pages worth since it hit many states.
