D4 batteries

What's the difference between D4 batteries and regular D batteries? I just bought out all CVS's D4 batteries because they were on sale. I don't have a generator so need lots and lots of D batteries. Anyway, someone told me that the D4 batteries won't work in place of regular D batteries. Is that true? I have battery run fans, lights and small TV. Do I need to return them?

I need to learn not to post such stupid questions. My friend told me I couldn't use D4 batteries as they are larger than regular D batteries, so I posted the previous question.
How crazy!! I just learned that D4 just means there are 4 batteries to the package ----- they are regular D batteries.
