"Dean" a Cape Verde hurricane?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

"Dean" a Cape Verde hurricane?

#1 Postby TheEuropean » Tue Aug 14, 2007 12:23 pm

Hi,

if "Dean" becomes a hurricane, is it a Cape Verde hurricane or not?

In the TCFAQ we find this definition: "Cape Verde-type hurricanes are those Atlantic basin tropical cyclones that develop into tropical storms fairly close (<1000 km [600 mi] or so) of the Cape Verde Islands and then become hurricanes before reaching the Caribbean. (That would be my definition, there may be others.)"

So "Dean" won't be a Cape Verde hurricane? Or what are the other definitions, Chris Landsea tells us?

It was a depression 520 miles from the CV islands...but not a storm.

I certainly believe that this would be considered a Cape Verdes system especially since there isn't an IAO or AMS official designator. A tropical depression may not be a "named" storm but it is none the less a barotropic system and by all definitions a tropical cyclone. Dean qualifies!

I agree, sure a Cape Verde system, but not a Cape Verde hurricane (if it becomes one) if you follow the definition in the TCFAQ. May be we need a new definition.

"<1000 km or so". It's not set in stone. I think common sense would say Dean, if it does become one, will be considered a CV cane.

Most definitely a Cape Verde storm... on its way to being a Cape Verde hurricane.

Yes, Dean will definitely be considered a Cape Verde hurricane. It's origins were in the same area as hurricanes Donna, Hugo, Allen, etc and they were also Cape Verde hurricanes.

Good morning Alan.....thanks for the kind words! :)

A lot has changed in my life since the last time I posted here; I'm alone now (my grandmother/ the precious lady who raised me.....she sadly passed away last fall at age 93), but am also now free of family responsibilities (caring for elderly loved ones) for the first time in over a decade. I'm doing fine and planning to chase any hurricanes which threaten the U.S. coastline this season (am chasing storms again this year for the first time since 1995).

Wishing you and everyone here at Storm2K a wonderful day today.....and even better days to come! :)

God Bless,
Perry
