Central Pacific added to the NHC’s AOR
"The current economic situation caused a reduction in personnel" said Read.
By Chis Mozzo / Ailos News

The National Hurricane Center, located in Miami, Florida, used to cover all tropical cyclone activity between the western coast of Africa and longitude 140°W in the Pacific Ocean. Starting May 15, 2009, the area of responsibility will increase from the coast of western Africa to the International Dateline Time.

The tropical cyclone activity in the Central Pacific used to be covered by the Central Pacific Hurricane Center (CPHC), which was part of the National Weather Service. Most of the storms that affected the area were systems that formed in the Eastern Pacific and moved westward across the Pacific Ocean crossing the longitude 140°W.

The director of the National Hurricane Center, Bill Read, expects the transition to run smoothly. According to Dr. Read, “the current economic situation caused a reduction in personnel” and it was decided that the CPHC responsibilities could passed to the NHC without any consequences.

The Hawaiian list of names will continue to be used for tropical storms that reach 39 mph in the Central Pacific. Named tropical cyclones entering the Central Pacific will keep their original names.

See, the thing about this is no article would ever use "AOR" in its title as no one would know what it is. Pretty obvious prank ;)

Yeah, and "Dr. Read" gives it away too.

Highlighting the link and it ends in .jpg raises eyebrows too. Nice try though.

It seems everyone is already tuned to this time of the year and expecting my jokes to appear. Last year some said it "looked too real and misleading." This year I decided to make a softer joke. It worked and Feliz Día de los Inocentes to everyone!!!
