GFS and Cape Verde system

#1 Postby ameriwx2003 » Mon Jul 28, 2003 8:28 am

We saw this last week with the GFS and a few other models developing a Cape Verde system but this is the first one I have seen the GFS bring intact all the way across. Still along way down the road for this solution to happen but hey at least its something to talk about:):)

Are you talking about the system they track all the way through the GOM 16 days out? Shows it coming into the Fl Big Bend area around day 15?

At this time of year it definitely gives us something to talk about. With the "normal" CV season almost here we should be watching that area more closely anyway. Are any of the other models holding it? I have not had a chance to check before I posted this.

It is interesting that it stalls it in the NE GOM for a few days before it takes it in.

Yes thats the system that the 06 UTC took into the Gulf I am talking about. The 12 UTC now has it a fish storm:):) but the track is going to flip flop back and forth for days you can count on it and lets see if the tendency of the GFS to bring trofs to far east across the US is the case once again in the longer term. What I really wanted to point out is the GFS keeps this system intact throughout voyage across the Atlantic:):)

That's the thing to watch with extended models (beyond 3-5 days)...is the consistency trend...

There's no way to tell where this system will recurve yet....but the fact the GFS keeps showing it run after run tells me it's likely to be significant (T.S. or hurricane).

Interesting. The 12Z NOGAPS and the 12Z CMC now show the wave, which is gonna get its "kick" from the energy coming off Africa now. If you look at the new run of the GFDL for 99L, you see this wave/TD/TS show up just to the east of the Lesser Antilles. So there is some model consensus on this thing. Let's see if it becomes reality. Cheers!!

How much of the SAL is still out over the Atlantic basin and does the models take this into consideration when they are showing this feature in its runs?

Steve. Yes they are starting to pick up on the Cape Verde system also. Like Jetmaxx pointed out the trend has been for development from the model runs. It will be several days before we get a trend how far across the Atlantic this will make it. That is of course if it does in fact develope:):)
