Ahhhh Floyd, now that had a huge role in one of SE England's strongest storms in about 250 years, helped develop a beastly depression, that caused 80-110mph gusts across a decent area of SE England, Low countries and N.France.

Oh wow I'm exactly the same way. I was a print journalism major in college, and graduated this May. I still haven't been able to find a job and will probably have to move on to a different field. The Andrew videos were amazing by the way!

Yes, Frank, back in those days, they actually explained the weather. Now all you get is sound bites from people who don't know what they're talking about. And that can be applied to communications overall. The stupid media is making its viewers/readers stupid.

Yes, I agree, it's incredible and sad at how the quality has decreased over the past 25 years - there are still some knowledgable people in media, but most of those people are at or near retirement, and the new crop of media people are mostly clueless college journalism majors...

A sad example - last hurricane season was terrible for Haiti, as we all know, and at one point it was noted that much of the flooding was due to the fact that 95% of that country's forests are denuded...

On hearing this, the OCM (who earned "honors" in geology from a well-known university) replied that she wasn't aware of that basic fact - and instead, perhaps out of embarrassment, said, "We should host a special on that [topic]!"...

I'm sure she'd would be hosting it - without even knowing what she was talking about!!!

Of course, a large percentage of the American public believe everything these clueless people say - and we wonder why things are now the way they are...

Also Cuba, perhaps even more so then Haiti, afterall they got hit by Fay, Gustav, Ike and Pamola, so a very bad season.

Thanks, though I must admit the '80s NHC/TWC videos are fun for me personally, since I was part of it all at that time, and could see myself in the background in at least one of the Neil Frank interviews - good memories...

Hard to believe it's been that long - ouch...

We had a very talented group of people at the NHC in those times, and that's not to say that the forecasters and technicial staff of today are less, but back then those who worked at the NHC were often the pioneers of tropical meteorology forecasting (or learned under those who were the pioneers of forecasting), so they learned how to make hurricane forecasts minus a computer...

That is very similar to Dr. Forbes (TWC) who studied under Dr. Fujita, and helps to explain why Dr. Forbes is so knowledgeable of his specialty, similar to the late John Hope of the NHC/TWC of my time, who as we all know was a natural at hurricane forecasting...
