Where did you get your information? I ask because there seems to be some errors. For example the most recent reanalysis study of Hurricane Edna (1954) that I have found places the intensity of the storm at category 3 not category 2 and Hurricane Audrey (1957) at category 1 not category 4, at initial US landfalls.

I used Unisys weather, but looking at this it seems that Unisys weather haven't updated their site for some of these storms so its now fixed

The new study that mentions Hurricane Audrey (1957). I thought she was in the other one also, but on second check I was wrong.

When I did this I should have used Wikipedia because its updated with the reanalysis info unlike Unisys weather,

2004 has the most US landfalls out of any atlantic hurricane season

Those are preliminary and not yet official, but it seems like they are reliable since they are reviewed data.

Also for recent storms:

2011 - Lee is missing, it should be listed as a STS (subtropical storm) at landfall.

2009 - Ida should be deleted, it stayed just offshore Louisiana (but not a landfall) when a hurricane, then became post-tropical before landfall.

2008 - Dolly was Cat 1 at landfall and Gustav was Cat 2.

2007 - Barry was a TD at landfall.

1995 - Erin was a Cat 1 at landfall (eyewall was ashore but not center of eye as a Cat 2 then weakened on final approach) and Opal was a Cat 3 at landfall.

also, if you want to include Hawaii:

Eugene 93 TD
Orlene 92 TD
Iniki 92 Cat 4
Gilma 88 TD
Douglas 84 TD
Raymond 83 TD
Dot 59 Cat 1
Unnamed 58 TS
Since Hawaii is an archiplego, it can have a lot of near-misses such as:
Neki 09 TS (on the Northwestern Islands)
Kenneth 05 TD
Nele 85 (on the Northwestern Hawaii Islands)
Gil 83 TS
Iwa 82 C1
Dainel 82 TD

If the Northwestern Islands are part of the Hawaiian Islands then wouldn't those be hits and not near misses?

Is this US mainland, US States or all US properties which would then include Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands?

And if you include remnants, then you have three in Alaska: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:H ... _in_Alaska

Nice post / thread. Thanks. I never would have guessed that there had been at least one tropical system making landfall in the US every year since 1950. I assumed there were some years with no landfalls at all. Wow...
