Will Isabel's Name be Retired?

#1 Postby DCmetroraleigh » Thu Sep 18, 2003 9:03 am

Now that she is so much weaker than she once was, it seems less likely that her name will be retired. But all the media hype makes me think that she will be remembered for quite a while.

You don't need a strong landfalling storm to be retired

Note Lili was retired and she made landfall as a strong category 1

I think Isabel will be retired simply because she made Cat 5 status at least twice..

Also- Don't forget a name that still shreaks shivers in some spines... ALLISON... and she was barely a minimal Tropical storm

Isabel is a large storm so she will cuase load of damage

but she is a fast mover but then again she isn't forcast to move back out over the Atlantic.

The only 2 hurricanes that reached cat 5 status in the Atlantic basin whose names were not officially retired were Ethel in 1960, and Edith in 1971. However, these names are not on the official 6-year list anymore, so I guess they could be considered "unofficially" retired. A side note: Ethel went from a minimal hurricane, to cat 5 status, and down to a tropical storm in 24 hours!

I was unaware that Lili was retired, with all due respect to anyone whose lives she impacted.

One name that I was very surprised was not retired was Gordon in 94. He was reponsible for up to 2000 deaths in Haiti, had a very complicated structure (from tropical to subtropical, back to tropical), and last but not least, his crazy, unpredictable track. I would have thought he'd be retired so research could continue on that system.

Isabel will likely be retired, since she was once a Cat 5 and she is hitting the US Coast as a Cat 2.

Lili was also retired for its Cuban damage, where it made landfall as a strong cat 2, which it may have been at Louisiana landfall as well. There were no dropsondes form the convectively active NW quad at landfall, which is where all the damage occurred

IMO, it is very doibtful that Isabel will be retired. The reaosn is that Bonnie, a storm of similar structure and intensity, was not retired. Also, the damage appears to have been minor, except in localized ares of the Outer Banks and Elizabeth City

What Isabel does to Richmond/DC/Baltimore will determine whether it is retired or not, IMO.

Gentlemen: If the losses from this storm are in the $1 billion or a$2 billion range (which is a reasonable amount for a Cat. 2 storm hitting such highly developed geographic area, according to insurance folks) the storm name will likely be retired. Lili and Bob and Allison are good examples of storms in which the damage was not "catastrophic" but was in such a wide area that the aggregate amount of losses reached the billions.

I vote retired.

It was a storm of extraordinary magnitude!

I can't imagine ever having to ask "Which Isabel"?

Losses will exceed $2 billion

#18 Postby Anonymous » Thu Sep 18, 2003 4:59 pm

Izzy will be retired. She is mod to strong Cat 2 with massive reach. Losses will easily exceed $2 billion. Just look at these sample reports from NC and VA and the high winds/heavy rains haven't even really impacted the major metro areas of DC and Baltimore yet or Pennsylvania.

But Bonnie was only inland for 12-24 hours before heading back over the Atlantic. Whereas Isabel is not expected to turn back over the Atlantic.
