#1 Postby Josephine96 » Thu Sep 25, 2003 9:22 am

Does anyone know what the record is for most TD's in the Atlantic.. I know if these 2 waves form it would be 15 and 16... I'm just curious about the answer

There has to be more than 17... there were 21 tropical storms in 1933, and 19 named storms in 1995, so they had to be depressions first!

We will probably never know for sure. NHC didn't begin counting tropical depressions in the stats until the late 1990's....and we know there were likely 21 or more in 1933.

Before 1998, if a tropical depression failed to reach tropical storm status....it wasn't counted in the stats (and to be totally honest, I wish they weren't now).

"Mr. Turtle ? How many licks does it take to get to the tootsie roll center of a tootsie pop ?"

"I don't know. Why don't you go ask Mr. Owl?"

"Mr. Owl, how many licks does it take to get to the tootsie roll center of a tootie pop ?"

"Let's find out," *Owl unwraps it and licks it once.* "Ah-one ..." *Second lick.* "Tah-hoooo (two)..." *Bites into it this time.* "Thah-reeee...ahem... three." *Hands bare stick back to the boy.*

"How many licks does it take to get the tootsie roll center of a tootsie pop? *Crunch* The world may never know."

Yes indeed, at least 19 tropical depressions had to have formed in 1995, as there were 19 named tropical cyclones that year.

There were 8 named tropical cyclones in 1993.

FWIW, there were 21 tropical depressions in 1995. However, the true answer will not be known since best track analyses do not include depressions. Only subtropical storms, tropical storms, and hurricanes are used in the NHC's best track analysis and the AOML/HURDAT reanalysis project which has already completed 1851-1910 and Hurricane Andrew.

1933 may or may not have had more than 21 total depressions since there were 21 tropical storms (unless the AOML reanalysis project provides otherwise). Aside from 1995, another year (1887) was reanalyzed to have 19 storms, not the original 17 in the first best track datasets.

Can u imagine the sort of season we would be having if every TD had at least strengthened to a Tropical Storm - like in 1998 season.

If that was the case this year would be giving 1995 a run for its money.
