African wave train question

Okay, this one is another one for the mets or power watchers.

I understand that the ITCZ migrates across the equator based on the seasons (with only minimal projection into the south atlantic) and that it is a worldwide occurance. What I don't understand is how the African monsoon (Derecho mentioned that monsoon troughs over africa cause these intense waves) operates or any monsoon for that matter.

Would someone point the way to information on the ITCZ and african monsoon?

Thank you cycloneye. Very good information about africa and its climate, but those pages don't explain the mechanism. Or if they did, I overlooked them.

Very helpful links, Ola. I'm fairly new to the more serious side of meteorology (the science proper) and this board has a good learning curve to it. All different levels of both skill and breadth of knowledge.
