First, let me say that no one should ever underestimate or dismiss the power of hurricane force winds. When the wind is blowing so hard you can't stand up, there's going to be damage to trees and property. And maybe someone's life.
Here in Boca Raton we didn't experience the full wrath of Frances. However, we've had nonstop high wind and rain for almost 12 hours. The wind during the time from around 11 to 4 AM was the worst. Thw wind took down trees, basketball hoops (yes, folks actually left them out!) and other stuff. The people across the street had giant pottery pots with 12 foot topiary trees on either side of their driveway. Both pots are gone this morning-nowhere to be found. Approximately 8 feet of a Norfolk island pine tree has disappeared. I'm sure there's more.
If you've never experienced a hurricane, let me tell you that the wind makes NOISE. It whistles, it moans, it groans. The sound stays with you.
At 9 AM still raining and windy. Enough. ENOUGH.
How did other Boca residents do? BTW, we're lucky......we never lost power. Only cable. The phone service this morning seems spotty too, although my DSL service is fine.
