Severe Weather Alert from the National Weather Service

...COASTAL FLOOD STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HOUSTON/GALVESTON TX 433 AM CDT TUE SEP 14 2004
... MINOR COASTAL FLOODING AND SOME BEACH EROSION MAY DEVELOP FROM INCREASING WAVES AND SWELLS AS POWERFUL HURRICANE IVAN MOVES INTO THE CENTRAL GULF OF MEXICO...

THIS STATEMENT INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING COUNTIES... BRAZORIA... CHAMBERS... GALVESTON... HARRIS... JACKSON AND MATAGORDA.

POWERFUL HURRICANE IVAN IS NOW IN THE SOUTHEAST GULF OF MEXICO. IVAN IS EXPECTED TO MOVE INTO THE CENTRAL GULF OF MEXICO ON WEDNESDAY AND APPROACH THE NORTH CENTRAL GULF COAST LATE WEDNESDAY NIGHT OR EARLY THURSDAY MORNING. ALTHOUGH THE EXPECTED TRACK IS WELL EAST OF THE UPPER TEXAS COAST... INCREASES IN WAVES... SWELLS AND TIDES CAN BE EXPECTED BEGINNING TODAY.

SEAS CURRENTLY RUNNING 4 TO 7 FEET ARE EXPECTED TO RISE THIS AFTERNOON TO AROUND 6 TO 8 FEET. BY WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON... 7 TO 10 FOOT SEAS ARE EXPECTED. SEAS AND SWELLS WILL GRADUALLY DECREASE BEGINNING THURSDAY AFTERNOON AFTER IVAN MAKES LANDFALL.

SMALL CRAFT ADVISORIES ARE IN EFFECT FOR THE COASTAL WATERS OUT TO 60 NAUTICAL MILES OFFSHORE. IN ADDITION... GROWING SEAS AND SWELLS MAY LEAD TO SOME MINOR COASTAL AND BAY FLOODING AS TIDE LEVELS RISE... ESPECIALLY ACROSS THE WEST END OF GALVESTON BAY AND ALONG THE UPPER TEXAS COAST. TIDE LEVELS ARE CURRENTLY RUNNING 1 TO 1.5 FEET ABOVE NORMAL. TIDE LEVEL ARE EXPECTED TO INCREASE TO 2 TO 3 FEET ABOVE NORMAL ON WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY.

AT THIS TIME... TIDE LEVELS ARE EXPECTED TO REMAIN JUST UNDER 4 FEET. AT 4 FEET... LOWEST STREETS BEGIN TO FLOOD ON THE BOLIVAR PENINSULA AND THE WEST END OF GALVESTON ISLAND INCLUDING JAMAICA BEACH. TODDVILLE ROAD IN SEABROOK ALSO BEGINS TO FLOOD AT THE 4 FOOT LEVEL. IF LEVELS ARE EXPECTED TO REACH 4 FEET OR GREATER... A COASTAL FLOOD WATCH OR COASTAL FLOOD WARNING MAY BE REQUIRED....

SO does this mean we are gonna get some rain?? I cant remember the last time we had a measureable amount of rain??!! (Help me out here VB! ;) ) My water bill is higher so I can keep the grass and plants alive in my yard! Mother Nature needs to turn on the sprinklers!!

VERY doubtful on any rain from Ivan unless he turns West. That is not going to happen unless he stops where he is right now and just sits and lets the steering currents to his North pass him by and something builds the ridge from the N and E.

So unfortunately the answer is-turn on the sprinklers.

Not questioning you, David, but didn't we get rain from Georges? Or was that rain unrelated to him? I remember it when I first moved here and I thought to myself, "Dang! It doesn't rain like this in KY." I mean, it rained and rained and rained and I suppose I always thought it was Georges-affiliated.
