Re: Hurricane Dean Recon Discussion
Okay... I've been "out of the loop" recon-wise for a little while now, thanks to my growing family. I've noticed this year that the AFRES is appending a remark at the end of RECCOs: SWS = ###KTS
For instance, the latest RECCO...
URNT11 KNHC 171750
97779 17464 60160 64500 30400 06059 08058 /3134
40739
RMK AF304 0404A DEAN OB 32
SWS = 039KTS
LAST REPORT
Now, I know the 4 group (40739) means ENE winds (070°) at 39KT. I see that the SWS is also 39KT. What exactly does SWS stand for? Does it mean surface wind speed? ...and if so, what is the purpose of that line with the 4 group says the same thing?
Thanks.
(Consider this research for a new, upcoming version of ReconExcel...)

They were to have a new version this year but pojo said not all planes are equiped yet with it. Here is some more info on it senorpepr. And congrats on the growing family!

That would be 127mph given the .9 reduction to the surface?

Cat 4 yet? Looks like at least a very strong 3 from what I can gather.

I haven't seen the flight plan... either FL050 or FL100. Since Dean is a cat3.... FL050 might be too low.
I have no idea about the reduction. I'm not in the plane to determine that.

Re: Hurricane Dean Recon Discussion
130kts at max FL 10 second wind gust. They are flying around 700mb again, so a 90% Reduction to 117kts makes it Cat 4 with near 135mph winds. And this is just in NW Quad.
