Current SSTs & TCHP

Here is a comparison with last year, same date

Gulf

It's clearly visible that this year's SST are far warmer than last year (Up to 2 degrees warmer in most of the gulf) this time, the TCHP is a bit less in the Caribbean, but stronger in other places.

And in keeping with tradition here are 2005's

The temps are raising, looks like overall we are probably a little bit above where we were last year but clearly behind 05. This season though I think the temps will continue to rise for a little longer then in 07 as the lagged decay of the la nina continues.

Scary thing is the gulf as a whole seems warmer this year than 2005 even if you look at all areas of it...

Here are 2 gifs of the past 4 seasons for easier comparison

Nice comparison gifs, Meso. We definitely have warm waters in place for the hurricane season. It also appears that shear is somewhat lower this year, don't you think? Something will brew up soon down there, IMO

I think that this displays the differences among the last three seasons better:

The sea surface temperatures are slightly warmer in the Northern Atlantic near the Azores.

Yep 2008 does look warmer then 2007 though 2005 and 2006 do appear to be a little warmer overall right now though there is still time before we see the peak warming in the Atlantic.

Early season heat wave in the SE US along with cloud free days at sea is the main reason for the jump in the SST across the GOM and in around the Bahamas.
