Yes there's something about Alex.

2004 Alex was first named storm of the season, and one of the latest starts. (remember how many season over statements that year :D )

It was also the first major hurricane of 2004 (cat 3).

Scared the bejeebers (sp?) out of lot of tourists here on the OBX.

Went from TS to Cat 2 in 24 hrs.

etc

Maybe it's time to retire the name

Nuevo Leon Gov. Rodrigo Medina de la Cruz asked federal authorities to declare the state a disaster area Thursday after more than 700 millimeters (27 inches) of rain fell in 12 hours, the agency said.

"This is an extraordinary phenomenon that has never been seen before, that is going to leave serious consequences in highway and road infrastructure," he said, according to Notimex.

Alex dumped more rain on Mexico than the previous record-holder, Hurricane Gilbert, did in 1988, the National Water Commission said

I'm guessing June hurricanes in the Gulf don't bode well for the coming season usually...

Not really ...

1957 (Audrey) = 8 total systems for the season
1972 (Agnes) = 7 total systems for the season
2010 (Alex) = ?

FWIW, I have 13/7/3 for my 2010 predictions. I think Danielle will be the first major storm of the season, and perhaps the most memorable of the season ... just a guess.

My Records:

1. Strongest Category 2 in terms of pressure in the Atlantic. (947mbar)

2. Second strongest Alex named storm (unofficial) for all basins in terms of pressure. (947mbar)

3. Second strongest Atlantic hurricane in June, behind 1957's Audrey by only 1mbar. (Not sure, don't know how the WMO settles the UTC time issue).

Indeed, I missed Bonnie. I figured a 38 year gap felt a bit long.
