For the WPAC

Utor
Wutip
Nari
Haiyan

could be retired from 2013.

(Only my opinion)

Also no working documents at all yet on the WMO R IV meeting. Only two names - Ingrid and Manuel - have any chance there.

In every February, the ESCAP/WMO Typhoon Committee decides what names should be retired and chooses the replacement in the next year. If Haiyan should be retired, the retirement will begin in February 2014, and the replacement will be chosen in February 2015.

The ESCAP/WMO Typhoon Committee met this week, but i am yet to hear if the proposal to retire Haiyan and Sonamu went through.

Yes i said Sonamu which was requested by the Malaysian Meteorological Department because the system caused mass panic among the people living on Malaysia's coastline, due to the similar pronunciation of the name TS SONAMU with TSUANMI.

Interesting situation there, they had the same issue with Adolph and Israel in the EPAC. Haiyan definitely deserves retirement on impact alone.

Indeed - in fact there was a pretty interesting situation in Sri Lanka last year as well which is more related to the Adolph/Isreal case

Mahasen is the name of a god in Sri Lanka so several people protested the naming. As a result Cyclone Masshaen is also known as Cyclone Nameless in Sri Lanka and is liable yo be retired from the naming lists.

I think the most awkward situation with an Atlantic name was Hurricane Anita in 1977. That was around the time Anita Bryant was going on her anti-gay crusade and the media had nicknamed her "Hurricane Anita".

When the first storm of the 1977 season was named Anita, some people wondered if the NHC had done it on purpose. The truth was that Anita had been chosen for the 1977 season years earlier.

Anita ended up becoming a powerful Category 5 in the Gulf of Mexico and slammed into Mexico, killing 11 people and causing lots of damage. Anita was retired at the end of the season.

Haiyan, Sonamu, Fitow and Utor have been retired from the WMO Typhoon Committee List of names

The name Ampil has been selected to replace Bopha which was retired last year.

PAGASA has also updated its lists and website and replaced Labuyo, Santi, and Yolanda with Lannie, Salome and Yasmin

Typhoon Haiyan is the strongest and deadliest storm in the list since 2000.

Several reasons above to abolish naming and go to a numbering system, after which there will be no reason to retire anything.

Hurricane Mitch (~19,000), Hurricane Fifi (~8,000), Hurricane Flora (~7,000) were all deadlier then Haiyan. :(

Strongest? By winds and according to JTWC, yea. By deaths? Mitch 98 might have a problem with you saying that, heh.

Well actually Haiyan's death toll may have exceeded 22000 but it is unofficial. I forgot MITCH.

UN found at least 13000 corpses in the Visayas. Ndrrmc was even criticized for not counting the damages and toll properly. They stopped counting.

Don't forgot the cyclones in the Bay of Bengal where hundreds of thousands die from storm surge alone in one storm. These are by far the deadliest TC on earth.

I know a few but forgot...

Anyone have a list of these deadly cyclones?

Nargis is the deadliest retired name by far

However, since the name Nina was not retired, NO name should EVER be retired as it is unlikely one will be as bad as Nina was.

Those storms had no names therefore they weren't retired. Not sure about Nargis.
