Just had a conversation with a 33 year Tropical WX veteran I know in Maine. He is very concerned for all points even into DelMarVa.

Thanks, wxman57. I just e-mailed those results to my VA relatives. I think "38 miles from predicted hell" ought to get their attention.

Some incredible eye opening information and darned scary too!!! I don't believe most people had any idea a hurricane could maintain that much strength for that long that far inland!!! Thanks Wxman!!!!!

Martinsburg WV?

#27 Postby WVNancy » Mon Sep 15, 2003 2:06 am

Hi all, brand new to this board, and I'm scared. First off, I have a serious phobia of high winds and tornados. I just recently moved here from Ohio, where we never had to worry about things like hurricanes. Well...now I am in Martinsburg, WV which is 175 miles from Ocean City MD. Since I am so afraid of wind, and that is what this post is determining, can you PLEASE do this calculation for Martinsburg? My zip code is 25401. Thank you so much, and I just have to say..this board is awesome! You are all very knowledgable and I appreciate the opportunity to learn some things!

It says you'll lbe 2216 miles from the 25+ mph wind radius. I think you're gonna make it.

Hi Nancy,
I can't run an accurate profile now, as the storm accelerates so fast at landfall that I have to make a track adjustment to 12-hour track points when I get to the office. It's kind of complex, but when track points are 24 hours apart, and one point is way offshore with the next point way inland (like now), then the program must interpolate too much between track points. But I can change the track point intervals to 12-hrs to put one point right over eastern VA. This will give a better result for the landfall area.

Anyone want to see a wind profile for another city?

actually yes, if I may be so humble to ask. Would like to see numbers for mainland NC. New Bern, NC (28560 is zip code) is preferred if you can't do that then I could live with Wilmington, NC

My mother is even more of a hurricane fanatic then I am and this would interest her very much due to the sound and all the river and I know there are other NC mainlanders hiding in corners around here somewhere to :)

Oops! I messed up on yours, got confused. Just for that, I included the bottom portion of the wind profile for you. It has added detail about the proximity of stronger winds:

http://home.houston.rr.com/wx/newbern1.gif

http://home.houston.rr.com/wx/newbern2.gif

Note that you will NOT be very far away from 100+ mph winds on the current track. Let me put that into perspective, all it would take would be for Isabel to track about 1 degree farther west (on the compass) for you to be hit directly, sort of like if it moved NNW at 352 degrees vs 353 degrees. So you're by no means out of the woods as far as 100+ mph winds.

Sorry to drag this all the way back to the top of the posts but I had to say thankyou! And I am passing this info along. *big bear hugs* And I thank you for your note...looks like the track may have made that little nudge westward that your speaking about. Well it looks that way but if I am wrong can I blame it on that my eyes are still blury with sleep and trying to digest all the new info?

Just barely into the 25 mph winds. No significant storm effects there.

WOW....ty WXman...yikes! I have never been through winds like that before! OK...now I'm terrified! LOL But the thing is, I'm so glad that I'm finding this stuff out NOW so that I can make plans. We do not have a basement in our apartment....we don't need to worry about storm surge (obviously lol), but I do need to think about the wind strength, the trees in my backyard, and the possible tornados that may accompany the storm. I am thinking about booking a room at the local Holiday Inn with my family...I worked at this particular hotel and know that it is built very strongly, and has a very safe basement level that I could go to if need be. What do you guys think of that idea? Some people on another newsgroup that I read said I was crazy, I'd be safer at home...I totally disagree! And if I AM crazy, and would be wasting my money at a hotel, at least I'd FEEL safer LOL. Well, tyvm for that chart WXman....

Looks like it is going to get interesting here. Helps to know what to expect.

There are a few people where I work who have not been through a hurricane and keep asking what to expect. This should help them understand.

Thanks so much.
