I think the key is building codes and maybe public awareness. There is no way, as Derek mentioned, to evacuate masses of people in time. I think we need to look for ways to build safer structures and shelters if thats possible. The key from what I understand is the depth of the quake to the ocean floor. The more shallow of a quake the more chances for a tsunami. I was watching Discovery about a volcano near the coast of Africa. They say it may someday split in two, with one half falling into the ocean and cause a wave 2000ft high to sweep along the atlantic ocean and threaten the east coast of the United States. Scary!! :eek: Hopefully something can be done to better insure the safety of those living Along the coasts of the world to avoid another disaster such as the one in SE asia. :(
