Katrina: Dauphin Island update
More from the Dauphin Island BBS:
1) 1 lane on the causeway is open.
2) The Police Dept has a checkpoint on the West End and are supposedly looking for “loss of life” cases.
3) There is an oil rig on the public beach.
4) Boardwalk and Seafood Gallery are gone or severely damaged.
5) Gov Riley is schduled to do a fly-over ltr today so some aerial footage shld be available tda.
Also, and I don’t know if this has been fully substantiated yet, and I hope it is inaccurate:
- Only 10-20% of the west end homes remain.
- There are beachfront homes in Desoto Landing that have been destroyed.
I hope most of this information is not accurate but it came 2nd hand from folks on the island.
PS - The few bayside homes they checked were OK.
Heard from my aunt on Cadillac Dr. House is at street level. She has 3 inches of water in her house. Her car is flooded out. She said the water is slowly starting to recede.
* Cannot go past public beach unless have 4 wheel drive. State Police not letting people on beach past condos. Water under homes starting after condos.
* Gas platform has washed ashore on far west end & up against homes
* Dunes are gone. All flat on the west end.
* East end is OK except for debris
* Roof off furthest to west condos
* Seafood Galley is totalled
* Boardwalk Realty collapsed on itself
* Causeway is open- one lane on & off
* Sea Point homes are damaged- but not too bad
* Campground has debris. Looks OK.
* Appears the west end sustained the worst of it
* Aquarium looks ok
* Damage to new dock near ferry landing & road is washed out a bit.
