It is the much hailed Microwave Data sensor on the NOAA plane that can sense surface winds.

I think I'm having doubts about this product...

SFMR = Stepped Frequency Microwave Radiometer
Sfc = Surface

SFMR Sfc Wind = the surface winds as recorded from microwave sensors

23 MPH...that's not quite enough for it to be a depression.

It will still be carried as a depression. A) the wind requirements are only less than 34kt, B) it has the qualities of a tropical cyclones, C) they should find stronger winds in the NE side.

That is the west quadrant... not the northeast quad where the winds are probly slightly stronger

Sounds like that earlier 98 mph wind gust was a mistake, considering the rest of the ob data does not support such a strong wind...

Frank

P.S. Considering the vortex message posted since I first posted this a few minutes ago, that earlier 98 mph wind really does sound like an error...

Wonder if it will lose its TD status. Not a whole lot there and the overall structure of the system, which looked good earlier today, is looking awful right now.

Why is SFMR coming up with tropical storm force surface winds when flight level winds are much much lower?

I believe the flight level is an average and the SFMR is a Max. Wind. or gust.

These sensors need some good adjustments. They reported extremely strong winds (Category 5) in Katrina AS it was making landfall while FL winds reported lower values. I don't trust these instruments at all. FL winds do a much better job even if one has to estimate/convert to surface winds.

Dean...

Those are not peak winds or gusts. Those are surface winds reported in the cyclone by a totally different and relatively new instrument than the one that records FL winds.
