in seasons with multiple bad ones there is always one dominant one or 2 that everyone remembers and some of the others get forgotten in comparison
i.e
2004: Ivan or Charley (jeanne and Frances)
2003: Isabel (Fabian and Juan)
2002: Lili (Isidore)
1999: Floyd (Lenny)
1998: Mitch (Georges)
1996: Fran (Cesar and Hortense)
1995: Opal (Luis, Marilyn and Roxanne)
1988: Gilbert (Joan)
how storms become "forgotten"

Actually, when I think of 2004, I think of Hurricane "CharleyFrancesIvanJeanne" as being the big one. I think most Floridians think in the same lingo with those storms.
2005, I tend to forget Dennis and Emily. It almost feels like they were part of a separate hurricane season. Katrina, Rita, and Wilma take all the glory.

I totally agree with your last and I'd add 99's Bret and Dennis and 96's Bertha to the list, I think she was just as bad as 98's Bonnie.
