I really don't have a top ten. Living in New Jersey we do get our share of blizzards in the winter and I was here for Floyd. I was in South Florida when Hurricane Katrina passed by last year (Cat. 1 at that time), but that's pretty much it. If a hurricane was ever to hit us here, we would be in big trouble. My town is only 7ft above sea level.

ahhh...the '85 Christmas Freeze....I do remember that but I was in London at the time so only my parents had to deal with that one. I still have the newspaper from that day.

We keep saying that it's only a matter of time and it doesn't have to be a major one that will give us problems if we get a direct hit. We see what Nor'easter's do to our shoreline.

I have lived in Baton Rouge almost all of my life ... so some of this was just feeder bands and whatnot .. I will rank them in terms of effect to my family and/or property

1. Hurricane Andrew ... eye went pretty much over the city. Power out 3 days. I worked at McDonalds during that time frame and ours was the first in the city to get power. Worst working conditions I can ever remember.
2. Hurricane Katrina ... I actually left town since it was the weekend and went to visit relatives in Beaumont. We are still feeling the aftermath of that storm in terms of infrastructure limitations due to unexpected growing pains.
3. Tropical Storm Allison - Not just a Houston event. My parents had 2 feet of water in their home in Baton Rouge.
4. Hurricane Rita ... relatives drove in from Beaumont at the last minute. Baton Rouge got some TS gusts but not much more.
5. Jun 8, 1989 Southeast Louisiana tornado outbreak. "8 tornadoes struck southeastern Louisiana during the early morning hours" (from Intellicast.com) .. I will never forget being in the bathtub at 6am before we realized that the tornado had already lifted prior to reaching our part of town
6. 1983. 4 feet of water in my parents home from local flooding

And yall might laugh at this but when it snows in Baton Rouge it is a disaster

7. Late winter/early spring 4-6 inch snowfall in 1987. We had 6" in our front yard. A day later it was in the 70's.
8. The LSU wins the Sugar bowl over Illinois snowfall. I am not even a huge LSU fan (which is unusual for around here) but it is hard not to tie the two events together.

I lived through some ice storms and other tropical systems when I was younger that I have a hard time remembering. Hurricane Juan and its multiple landfalls on the Louisiana coast comes to mind because I was tracking all of the storms that season as a young child. I am sure if I went and looked up some things, I could fill out the rest.

1. Katrina
2. Andrew (near landfall in Louisiana)
3. Ivan (in southern Alabama)
4. Juan in 1985. (Barely a hurricane but put 4-5 feet of water in my home)
5. TS Allison (no water in my home but 4 feet of water throughout the subdivision. Also barely missed by a tornado, but killed 2 relatives less than a mile away.)
6. The south Louisiana Christmas Day Ice and Snowstorm on Dec. 25, 2004. (My parents' home where I was trying to make it had 3 - 4 inches of ice and lost power)
7. Putting up with the EXTREME humidity in August down in the swamps.

I've been through countless other canes and tropical storms, but I just don't remember their names.

I have not been through any natural disasters...but the worst I've
experienced is this:

Hurricane Jeanne- Wind Damage: 80 mph Gusts
Hurricane Frances- Surge Flooding and 70 mph Gusts
Hurricane Wilma- Minor Damage: 50 mph Gusts- but a downburst
produced an unofficial gust to near 80 mph

The Tampa Bay Area has been very lucky to escape major
natural disasters.
