Many folks in the Savannah area say the same thing...."hurricanes don't hit here." It only takes one, and I think people here have a false sense of security. Only time will tell, but as for me, I'll choose to prepare and not take my chances.

Hurricanes ARE very rare in Savannah. They are extremely common in Tampa (in a historical sense). Look at the return periods for both places. Tampa is a very frequently hit locale, but not in the past 100 years. Savannah just isn't hit much at all.

I believe that Jacksonville, Florida is 100% Hurricane proof!!!
I have lived in this city since 1983, and not have not seen any affects from any Tropical Systems....

Savannah: 79 years


Category 5 Return Period:

Tampa: 120 years

Miami: 33 years

JAX: 340 years

Savannah: greater than 500 years

Tampa Bay from the East, after seeing roof tiles
blown off and some structural damage along the
beaches...
Doesn't it take a category 1 to rip off roof tiles?

As we approach the new season I continually here people in the St.Pete /Tampa area say"we are protected from storms do to the angle of the coast or we have a protected bubble etc..-

I find that all a bunch of ****.I believe if the man upstairs says you will be hit you will be hit!!!

Is their any proof to feel otherwise?

Back when I lived in New Orleans people used to say the city was protected by strong magic, voodoo or a bubble, things like that.

Both Tampa and New Orleans are very vulnerable and both are interesting in that they were both very lucky in the 20th century. The 21st century may bring new things. Tampa is extremely vulnerable because the whole bay area juts out of the west coast. In that sense, it protects areas between Tampa and the big bend to a large degree. Tampa is the prime target on the west coast and it's only a matter of time.

Its weird however that Pinellas county juts out so much and yet the areas that dont stick have gotten hit more.

I don't think it made it quite that high.

Most of the winds were inland.

Orlando only had 53mph sustained with gusts to 67.

From this pic, you can see the highest winds when she approached Tampa were only 50kts, or 57.5mph.

The final report does not even list winds from Tampa or St Pete.

Frances was even less of a hit, as most of the energy from her was towards the NE as she approached Tampa.

Tampa probably had higher winds from Frances than from Jeanne.

Believing that some man up stairs sends storms or does anything is just as unscientific as a bubble theory of protection.

I agree with Kevin, storms are going to happen where the stearing currents & other factors lead them, and we just have to be ready for them.
