Note to self.....when evacuating from any future hurricane threatening the Gulf Coast, Oklahoma may not be far enough north!

Stay safe up there y'all.

At this rate, someone may have to travel to the North Pole...

Someone in Oklahoma should go chase the eye if they safely can!

Mesoscale forces that happen a lot with extratropical storms (one in February 2006 on the east coast had such). It is probably a subtropical storm right now. This belongs in the Active Storms section...

Is there any chance of a INLAND TROPICAL STORM/HURRICANE WARNING(S) to be issued by the NHC/TPC if this system meets the right criteria for TS classification?
OR JUST A SPECIAL STATEMENT FROM THE NHC/TPC OR SOME OTHER BRANCH OF THE NOAA NWS....

Inland warnings and watches are not the responsibility of the TPC, they're the responsibility of the various WFOs.

Just before the station went to "This Week With George Stephanopooulos" the local TV radar showed that the "eye" feature had been eaten away by the dry air so I think the system is weakening but not before giving the OKC metro area some more flooding rains and high winds....the TV news station said that they will break in if needed...

What they decide in the TCR will be quite interesting to see...I would call it a subtropical storm...

As the global climate continues to rapidly change, perhaps we'll be seeing more and more unprecedented events such as this. We're entering truly uncharted waters now. There's no telling what we'll be seeing in the future.

Oh, right. Taboo subject around here, huh? So sorry.

(By the way, CNN is covering only this story. The flooding in Oklahoma appears to be near-biblical.)

I have a question. NWS in Tulsa is mentioning the convection weakening due to the diurnal minimum. Springfield is mentioning that the dynamics are still very strong with this system. Is there a chance that this will increase again tonight during the diurnal maximum? If so, what should I prepare for? I am in SW MO between Springfield and Joplin.

The wind reports out of the Watonga airport were amazing. The tropical system I recall seeing this happen with was the remnants of Danny intensifying to tropical storm status while moving towards the Atlantic ocean over North Carolina.

I was thinking the same thing -- this is similar to Danny, though Danny never got this strong. I recall this happening a few other times too this time of year over the Carolinas. I would agree that it must have something to do with the temperature and moisture content of the atmosphere allowing the system to overcome the negative effects of the drag from the land -- as someone suggested, the hot and humid air becomes the source of the "heat engine" instead of the warm water in a "normal" tropical system.

It's certainly not impossible, and you would likely be near the heart of it if such happens. Until it hits the front over the northern US, it has nothing but tropical air to deal with.
