Re: Tropics Offically Flat lined !! (dead)
Being a Floridian this season is a mixed blessing. El Nino may have kicked the hell out of the hurricane season here but El Nino does not treat Florida gently in the winter. Don't can the radars yet folks, they'll be supercells over Florida this winter!

There must be some other interesting facts that I am missing. Personally, other than not having a landfalling storm, the best part of this season is this thread.
It was definitely a snoozer. The moments of this season pale in comparison to anything the Atlantic has had for 15 years. Hurricane Bill was actually not that interesting because it's strength and path are nothing out of the ordinary plus it's landfall was freaking downgraded! It couldn't even manage that. Fred remaining as a remnant was mildly amusing at best. The 2009 Atlantic Hurricane Season can be summed up in two words: weak sauce.

Someone should change the title to Atlantic Tropics Officially Flat Lined.

I wonder what 2010 will be like? How will we break out of this atmospheric funk? Or will it be another mild season dampened by Nino air?

Following the mega el nino of 1997, there '98 and '99 atlantic seasons were more than respectable in terms of trouble-making storms.

I'm looking forward to a more interesting 2010 season as far as tracking storms go,not the destruction. This year was a big sleeper.I did read on another forum that this might be a two year El Nino and it might become a strong one at that in 2010.I don't know if I believe that but he's a reputable source on the other forum and he had good points to back up his thoughts.

I've read that we might be into a slight La Nina by mid to later in 2010. Also a very reputable source. Didn't offer a lot of back up in the article I read, but I know he could or has it elsewhere. It will be interesting to watch and see what the signs are as we get into early 2010.

Current consensus is for a transition to enso neutral (nino 3.4 sst anomalies less than 0.5C) by next spring....

One thing to keep in mind, that the presence of el nino isn't, without considering other factors, an absolute predictor of how a season will be. Compare the nino 3.4 region sst anomalies (average for a 3-month period) for 2004 and 2009.....similar strength el ninos, very different seasons:
A-M-J 2004 = +0.3C
A-M-J 2009 = +0.2C
M-J-J 2004 = +0.5C
M-J-J 2009 = +0.6C
J-J-A 2004 = +0.7C
J-J-A 2009 = +0.7C
J-A-S 2004 = +0.8C (time of '04 parade of florida storms)
J-A-S 2009 = +0.8C

This was the worst season I've ever tracked. I didn't care as much though as past years because I've been busy with work(I got hired the day Bill was passing by the east coast).

What is that LDEO model smoking??? I hope it's just a reflection of the consensus because otherwise they really ought to retool that thing...

One thing is certain, 2010 couldn't possibly be worse than 2009 for storm watchers.

Watching the assault on Luzon in the WPac with storm after storm has been anything but boring....that's the thing with the tropics, chances are there is one basin that has enough going on to satisfy the avid storm watcher

Correction-for Atlantic basin storm watchers. It has been more than productive in other basins!!

Who would have thought that 2009 would feature this statistic.....
Ida is the first November hurricane to make landfall in an el nino year since 1925
And look at the track that storm took...

The path almost looks like Ida.
