As I watch this thread and see another monster getting stronger and larger bearing down on the USA all I can think is more people homeless, jobless, and sadly there will be more loss of life. I thought last year was bad but... my lord what the heck is going on this year? OK Mother Nature enough is enough.

I don't really have anyhing more to add than what has already been said: Except, the satellite pics of Rita are some of the most awesome and strange I've ever seen.

The first thing I learned in the study of hazards is that nature creates the hazard, humans create the disaster. If we didn't put people and homes and businesses in the coastal areas (and in flood plains inland), hurricanes would do no harm to us.

It is possible, and has been possible for some time, to mitigate against the worst of hurricane damage. But that takes public support for stringent mitigation efforts, and the political will to create and enforce the laws/raise the taxes/do whatever else it takes to restrict development in high risk areas, demolish and relocate preexisting development in high-risk areas, do the same with structures on inland flood plains, and require the building of hurricane-resistant structures within a certain range of the coast (and I don't mean roofs strapped down, I mean reinforced concrete and stilt-type construction).

Those are draconian policies. In fact, they are probably too extreme and impossible to justify economically. But, regardless, it remains true that we create the disaster by constructing vulnerable structures and populating them, and Mother Nature just provides the wind and water.

I totally agree. i chose to live on a barrier island and paid the price, it was my CHOICE where to live so I only have myself to blame, so why should i ask others to help me rebuild my life? People need to learn self responsibility. If a person died because they did not evacuate they only have themselves to blame, not the government which is essentially the us population.

we're in for a world of hurt. Anywhere Rita makes landfall would be bad. But if the other models follow the GFS and GFDL and shift north, I don't even want to think about the economic disaster that will unfold. A Cat 4/5 heading right over Galveston, TX City and Houston? We could end up with $5 gas and who knows what else. As for the human cost, if there is one positive to come out of the disaster that was Katrina, it's that people are paying a lot more attention now. I bet Galveston is a ghost town now, or should be soon, and hopefully, that will save many lives. Good luck to anyone in the path of this incredibly powerful storm.
