yep, we are closing in rapidly Gator....I am not into making predictions but FL is one I have to make this year. Sorry but the odds are against you my friend.

Sigh... Now if I can just get the closing done on a house I'm selling down here...

For some reason I thinking this will be a quite year for FL, maybe a sheared TS into SW FL early on but I'm thinking some strong systems that recurve E of of the Bahamas or pass by way to the South impacting Central America.

There probably will be some areas of disturbed weather that form around the Bahamas that move across FL as nothing more than just that. I think the GOM may get a break also but with the usual TS or two, no major hurricane. Puerto Rico and the Antilles, not so much so with at least a hurricane coming close or nearby probably at least two hurricane nearby and a couple of TSes but most North of the islands, enough not to have any major impact. Many more fish this year though...with an active MDR...

I'm thinking the Carolinas may be impacted this year with at least one strong system hitting the East Coast of the CONUS north of Florida, something that skirts the New England Coast or impacts that area would be something I had in mind, sheared by then but still with impact.

It is good to meet up with people that have the same passion/obsession that I have for this stuff. Not too many in the neighborhood could give a crap about anything other than what the weatherman says.

Might someone point me to general reading on hurricanes for a newbie? I'd like to get ready, and find myself stumbling over maps like wind shear (although study them intenensely and think I get it). Thanks in advance.

Have you tried the Tropical Reference Library right here on S2K?

Thank you TYNI. That's just what I've been looking for. Seems like I have a little reading to do this month.
Best to you. WLD. :D

Gator, I'm hoping it's a quiet one for us down here. I'm pregnant (yay! :) ) and due around Sept. 10th. NOT the best time for a baby to be due LOL I've joked that I've sent a memo to Mother Nature to just forget FL this year....Though, at this point we could use some good tropical downpours for a few days....

IKE taught a lesson I have teaching many years. Just because you live N of Houston does not mean you are immune to hurricane conditions. IKE's winds were a CAT 1/2 at best but covered a huge area. I measured a peak gust at 64mph here at the house in League City. Just imagine an Andrew a 160mph in the Houston-Galveston area. Welcome to the 2009 Hurricane Seaon. Time to be prepared is now.

Joe B posted Sunday stating there will be less GOM activity than last however he is worried the areas hit last year are more prone to be hit again this year which is the WGOM.

Well let's hope that something hits from Port Aransas southward (AND NOT ANY FARTHER NORTH!) because they desperately need the rain down there. Texas is a land of stark contrasts.

First invest of the year in the Atlantic, so this is the first milestone of the season, before it offically begins.

Just prior to turning in for the night, I flipped on the noaa radio to hear any hazardous-wx statement. Instead, there was this:

"For the North Atlantic, Caribbean Sea and the GOM...."

First TO of 2009. It went on to say that the chance of 90L becoming a TC was about 30%. But yesterday, they weren't giving it any chance at all.

I know that chronologically, Season begins on 6/1, but I always felt that it begins with the first tropical outlook of the year. Which would be today. So, I guess we lost the last 12 days. Welcome to Hurricane Season 2009. Let's hope it's a peaceful summer.
